Real News: Playhaus Events creator Rees Cameron clears the air

In response to an online article released on October 1st by ‘Vancouver Is Awesome’ with Tri City News, Rees Cameron responds to allegations made towards him claiming that his previous landlords are attempting to sue him for $60,000 in unpaid rent.

I would like to give an individually detailed response to all of the false and inaccurate accusations currently being made against me. I’ll begin by saying this article is the first I am hearing of these allegations; I have not been served any legal court documents in regards to this matter.

I lived in the penthouse on Pacific street for eight months before I received an eviction notice, however, previous to receiving an eviction I requested to break my 12-month lease early. I signed a year lease that began on August 15th 2018, and I requested to break the contract in April for a number of reasons, I didn’t want to live there for the summer and I was receiving pressure from strata. When I requested to break the lease early, strata complied with the decision, and as per the strata by laws I of course forfeited my damage deposit for breaking the lease early. It is important to note that when I moved into the penthouse there was no move in inspection and there was no move out inspection. I have text messages with the building manager accepting that I was breaking the lease early, however between the time that I requested to break the lease the property manager served me an eviction notice. The penthouse was relisted for rent in April as soon as I gave my notice and it has been on the market ever since. I should also note the apartment is now currently listed for $3,000 less than what I was paying per month in rent.

It would appear to me that Onni Property Management has been unable to rent the unit since I moved out in May, and is now possibly facing pressure from the owner as to why the space has been empty for four months. That would explain the rental listing price being decreased and a news article being published not only highlighting the 4,000-sq foot penthouse in my event planning promotional video but also including a real estate listing photo from luxuaryrentalsuites.ca of the penthouse. If the owner was hoping to get his penthouse rented by using my social media reach, I truly hope it works for him. As Gary states in his article, “None of the allegations have been proven in court”.

The article claims despite the eviction I refused to leave, this is also untrue. I have text messages with corresponding dates to prove that I requested to break my lease before I was served an eviction, I wanted to leave.

Onni claims in the article they have incurred costs while trying to re-rent the unit, however since there was no move in or move out inspection, I cannot legally be held responsible for this.

This article is trying to spin Playhaus and our events as negative, and it aims to do so by colliding the issue with Onni Property Managements unrented penthouse with our extremely successful events. Which I might add didn’t break any laws or cause any damages, I can also prove that.

I might also add nobody from Onni Property Management has reached out to me to discuss this. My lawyer and I will patiently wait for them to contact us in any further regard to this matter and happily provide any and all proof I have to dismiss these allegations.
