One game. Thirteen years of anticipation.
There are video-game launches, and then there are releases that make the rest of the entertainment business pay attention. Grand Theft Auto VI belongs in the second category. Rockstar's return to Vice City arrives with almost three decades of history behind it, a vast audience built by GTA V and a question much bigger than whether the map is large: how much of the world's attention—and disposable income—can one game command?
As of November 5, Rockstar's official site lists November 19, 2026 as the release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also advertises pre-loading from November 10. The launch platforms shown are not a promise of a simultaneous PC release, and buyers should not assume their PS4 or Xbox One will run it.
The basic setup is a criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida, with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos depending on each other after an easy score goes wrong. The appeal is recognizably GTA: driving, danger, ambition, satire and a place that looks inviting until everything starts going sideways. The difference is the size of the commercial expectation surrounding it.

Meet Raul Bautista—the cover star, not a mystery leak
If Raul is the character who caught your attention, there is good news: his existence no longer depends on a rumour account. Rockstar's official character page identifies Raul Bautista as a seasoned bank robber who recruits people willing to take bigger risks. His charm and experience come with a warning: his recklessness keeps raising the stakes for his crew.
That makes him a fitting face for a story about risk and enormous rewards. It does not make him the announced lead or establish that players can choose him as a playable protagonist. Rockstar's main story presentation centres Jason and Lucia. A character being featured prominently in promotional material is different from a confirmed playable role.

How a top-down Scottish game became an entertainment heavyweight
The original Grand Theft Auto appeared in 1997, developed by Scotland's DMA Design. Its overhead perspective looks modest beside today's trailers, but the idea was already disruptive: a city where the player could drive, explore and create trouble rather than simply follow a narrow sequence of levels. Its fictional geography already included names that would become famous—Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City.
GTA III made the decisive leap into a fully 3D city in 2001. Vice City followed in 2002 with its unmistakable 1980s atmosphere; San Andreas expanded the ambition in 2004. GTA IV arrived in 2008, and GTA V in 2013. VI's return to Vice City is not simply a remake of the 2002 setting: Rockstar is presenting contemporary Leonida, with the culture and contradictions of a different era.
The financial record explains the pressure. Take-Two said GTA V exceeded US$1 billion in worldwide retail sales in its first three days in September 2013. By August 2026, Game Developer reported Take-Two's figure of more than 230 million units sold-in across three console generations. Sold-in is a publisher's distribution measure, not a count of 230 million unique people. Re-releases and repeat purchases matter.

The Canadian price: C$109.99, not a mystery US$100 rumour
At the time of checking, the Canadian Xbox Store lists GTA VI Standard at C$109.99 and Ultimate at C$139.99, before applicable taxes. It also lists an Ultimate Edition upgrade at C$30. Those are regional storefront prices, not a currency conversion invented for this article. Check your chosen platform's Canadian checkout before paying; offers and listings can change.
For comparison, Rockstar's store displays a US$79.99 price for its code-in-box product, while The Independent reports UK prices of £69.99 for Standard and £89.99 for Ultimate. A Canadian C$109.99 listing is not evidence that the US standard edition costs US$109.99. Currency labels are essential, particularly after years of speculation about a US$100 base game.
One easily missed detail: Rockstar says its boxed physical version contains a download code, not a disc. A box on a shelf therefore does not necessarily mean a disc you can lend or resell. Its store estimates shipping from November 12. The Xbox listing also describes a pre-order GTA+ month with redemption conditions; do not mistake a promotional subscription month for a requirement to buy an ongoing subscription to play the advertised single-player game.

What a billion-dollar launch could actually do to the economy
Start with the obvious beneficiaries: Rockstar and its parent Take-Two, platform storefronts, retailers and businesses selling compatible hardware and accessories. A major release can also generate work and revenue around streaming, video production, guides, music discovery and advertising. Canadian retailers and creators can participate in that activity without the game being made exclusively in Canada.
The scale is easy to illustrate without pretending to predict sales. At a hypothetical average retail price of US$80, 30 million copies would represent US$2.4 billion in gross retail spending; 40 million would represent US$3.2 billion. Those are arithmetic scenarios, not sales forecasts, pre-order totals or money already earned. Actual average prices, regional sales, discounts, taxes and platform arrangements would change the result.
Take-Two's August 2026 outlook called for US$8 billion to US$8.2 billion in fiscal-2027 net bookings across the company, according to Game Developer. That is not a GTA VI-only sales prediction. Bookings, accounting revenue, consumer retail spending and profit are different measurements; none can be substituted for the others to create a bigger headline.
There is also displacement. Money spent on GTA VI may be money not spent on another game, a movie, a restaurant visit or another purchase. Some console purchases may be brought forward rather than created from nothing. A spectacular entertainment launch can redistribute spending and create valuable business opportunities without producing an equivalent increase in Canada's GDP. Claims that one game will rescue an entire economy go well beyond the evidence.

Expect a fight for attention—not just game sales
The other scarce resource is time. A huge release can dominate gaming conversations, recommendation feeds, livestreams and search demand. For competing publishers, that creates a scheduling and marketing problem: releasing into the same attention window can make an already expensive launch harder to notice. That is a business risk, not proof that every other publisher will lose money.
For Canadian creators and small businesses, useful coverage may outperform empty hype: explain the actual local price, compatible consoles, accessibility options once verified, parental controls or the difference between editions. A retailer promising an unconfirmed feature or a creator treating every viral clip as genuine risks losing credibility just when the audience is largest.
The longer-term question is retention. GTA V's durability came from more than its opening weekend, including re-releases and the GTA Online ecosystem. VI could have a similarly important afterlife, but that is not permission to invent launch-day multiplayer features. The Canadian Xbox listing explicitly describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. Treat claims about a future online rollout as separate from what is currently being sold.

The real leak—and the rumours that still need a label
There was a genuine security incident. In September 2022, Rockstar confirmed that an unauthorized third party had accessed its systems and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage of the next GTA. GamesIndustry.biz reported that 90 in-development video clips had been posted. Rockstar said at the time that it did not anticipate a long-term effect on development.
Those clips were not a finished-game review. Development footage can contain placeholder art, debug interfaces, unfinished systems and features that change or disappear before release. It cannot establish the final map, stable frame rate, launch-day mission list or the quality of the shipped product. This article does not reproduce or link readers to stolen footage.
Apply the same caution to alleged voice-actor lists, giant budget estimates, supposed early copies and screenshots promising surprise features. Unless Rockstar, a platform listing or another clearly identified reliable source establishes a claim, label it as unconfirmed—or leave it out. Raul's official character page is stronger evidence than a post claiming he has just been discovered.

Six details worth knowing before launch
First, GTA's Scottish roots predate its Hollywood-scale reputation. Second, Vice City was a fictional location in the original 1997 game, not a name invented for the 2002 release. Third, the thirteen-year gap between V and VI is a gap between numbered releases, not thirteen years without GTA updates or commercial activity.
Fourth, Raul is officially revealed, but that does not make him the confirmed playable lead. Fifth, a boxed copy can be a download code rather than a disc. Sixth, an expensive Ultimate Edition and an optional subscription promotion are separate purchasing decisions—not evidence that every buyer must pay both to begin the single-player story.
One final practical point for families: Canada's Xbox listing carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating, with content descriptors including intense violence, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, and in-game purchases. The cheerful sunsets do not make this a children's game. Check the rating, purchase permissions and household spending limits before a young player gets access.

Watch the official trailer—then judge the finished game
Rockstar's second trailer offers an official look at the world and characters without relying on stolen material. It is promotional footage, not independent testing of every console, a guarantee of performance or proof that every cinematic moment is player-controlled.
The sensible expectation is a major cultural and commercial event, not an economic miracle. The sensible buying decision is equally straightforward: confirm your platform, read the Canadian price and edition details, understand what the box contains, and wait for trustworthy release coverage if performance or accessibility is central to your purchase. The best story here is already enormous without adding facts nobody has confirmed.
